Business Intelligence SoftwareSASSA is a government agency that distributes social grants to support vulnerable South Africans. It uses an internal dashboard platform to enable real-time visibility into grant activity, user engagement, and operational trends. The product was built for internal use by government employees, analysts, and internal stakeholders.

As the sole product designer on this project, I began by making sense of the dashboard’s purpose, figuring out who used it, why it existed, and what wasn’t working. Historical design files, team feedback, and existing workflows were reviewed to identify key friction points. This helped strip out the complexity and resulted in a refined, cleaner solution that spoke directly to user needs.
Convincing a board of trustees to relook at a 13-year-old legacy platform, underutilized by most of the corporation, posed significant challenges. Navigating the complexities of South African government institutions demanded strategic communication and persistence to drive meaningful change. By raising awareness of the platform’s underuse, I helped initiate conversations that led to actionable plans aimed at boosting engagement and adoption.
